焼尻発電所の歴史

焼尻島に電気が灯るまでには、島の人々の努力と時代の移り変わりがありました。

焼尻島の電気事業は、昭和22年（1947年）、漁業協同組合を母体として「焼尻電気事業協同組合」が発足したことに始まります。

島の人々が自ら電気を供給する仕組みをつくり、暮らしを支えていたのです。

その後、昭和34年（1959年）に羽幌町と合併したことを機に、電気事業も羽幌町へ移管されました。

さらに昭和44年（1969年）には、焼尻島と天売島を結ぶ海底ケーブルが敷設され、翌45年（1970年）には電気事業が北海道電力へ移管されました。こうして、現在の電力供給体制へとつながっていきます。

一方、通信用ケーブルは、さらに古く、明治33年（1900年）に苫前・焼尻・天売の間に敷設されました。

今では、電気も電話も、あって当たり前のものになっています。しかし、海に囲まれた離島で、それらを整備し、維持していくことは決して容易なことではありません。

電気や電話の歴史をたどると、島の暮らしをより便利に、より豊かにしようと努力してきた人々の歩みが見えてきます。

普段は何気なく使っている電気や通信にも、焼尻島の歴史が刻まれているのです。

The History of the Yagishiri Power Station

The history of electricity on Yagishiri Island began in 1947, when the Yagishiri ElectricgUtility Cooperative was established with the local fisheries cooperative as its foundation.

At the time, the island’s residents worked together to provide electricity for their community, taking the first steps toward a more comfortable and convenient way of life.

In 1959, when Yagishiri was incorporated into the town of Haboro, the electricity business was transferred to the town.

Later, in 1969, a submarine power cable was laid between Yagishiri and neighboring Teuri Island. The following year, in 1970, responsibility for the electricity business was transferred to Hokkaido Electric Power, which has continued to provide power to the island ever since.

Telephone communications have an even longer history. In 1900, a communications cable was laid connecting Tomamae, Yagishiri, and Teuri.

Today, electricity and telephone services are things we often take for granted. But establishing and maintaining these essential services on remote islands surrounded by the sea has never been an easy task.

The history of electricity and telecommunications on Yagishiri reveals the efforts of generations of islanders who worked to make life more convenient and comfortable for their community.

Even the everyday conveniences we rarely think about carry a part of Yagishiri Island’s history.
